How to Successfully Shift from Corporate Work to Digital Marketing

Do you often ask yourself, “How can I work smarter, not harder?” If you are like me, you’ve probably been searching for ways to start working online, finding out about digital marketing, affiliate marketing, selling products online and not sure where to even start! That dream of doing something different can seem out of reach, whether that is changing career, working more flexibly, being your own boss or being able to travel the world and earn an income! In summary, to have an opportunity to mix it up a bit! For years, I buried that dream and continued climbing the career ladder as a HR professional, always focused on advancing my career.

But, 12 months ago I finally made the leap out of the office and into affiliate marketing and I’ve written this article to let you know how I did it. I know how easy it is to start getting involved, but also how easy it is to give up and move onto the next thing as it all seems too confusing. I had no clue how to do it, but I was lucky to find someone who did, so I want to share that with you too!

This really is such an amazing time to start getting involved in Digital Marketing. Never before have there been so many opportunities to make a change and to start working in a more modern way, which is far more flexible and a change from the Corporate office environment. I’ve never felt more excited and alive!

It hasn’t been without its challenges though and I was constantly stopping due to fears (lack of experience, tech skills, confidence, stepping out of my comfort zone, and many others!). I confronted my fears, wrote them down and turned them into opportunities. So I’ve written about these, and the pros and cons of making this shift to help save you time and give you the information you need to make the change.

Who Am I?

Hey! I’m Sarah and I’ve been focusing on affiliate marketing with my husband Lee (in the first photo!) for over 12 months now.

Working as an employee in HR was all I knew and I did well too, reaching Director level. I was looked after from a financial perspective and the benefits package was great.  But, it was weird as when I looked ahead, I couldn’t see how I could continue in the same type of role for another 20+ years. My future seemed written out already and that made me feel quite trapped. I was also becoming pretty worn out as each year passed.  I was often in a blur during the weeks and so tired when I got to the weekends that I’d fall asleep by 8pm.  Not great when you are trying to watch a film with your husband! I thought there was something wrong with me as other people around me seemed to be so focused on progressing and being ‘available’ (even when on holiday) 24/7.  This shift in the office environment has been happening for some time and I realised it wasn’t for me. I needed something different.

My husband and I spoke to a good friend of ours and he opened our eyes to a different and more modern way of working through Digital Marketing.  It was all brand new to us, I had no idea so many people were working in a way which was much more flexible, while generating income and living a life with less stress.  Less stress…that was the game changer for me!

What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing includes a variety of online strategies aimed at promoting products, services, or brands through digital channels. Unlike traditional marketing, which relies heavily on physical media such as newspapers, magazines, letters etc, digital marketing is all about the internet, social media, search engines, email, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and mobile apps and to reach a targeted audience.

The Pros And Cons Of Choosing Digital Marketing?

PRO’s	CONS
Flexibility and Freedom If you want to manage your own time and not be bound by hours set for you, this is a great move to make!	Learning Curve While digital marketing is great for newbies, there is a learning curve in getting to grips with tools, platforms and strategies.  It is changing at a fast pace so it requires ongoing commitment and investment in yourself to keep up.
High Demand for Digital Marketing Skills Opportunities to get involved in digital marketing are abundant! This can include content creation, social media management, or data analytics. You don’t have to be on camera either if thats not for you!	Competition Digital marketing can be a highly competitive field. You have to find ways to stand out from the crowds and channel your creativity.
Opportunity for Creativity This is a great creative outlet that is often missing in corporate office roles. You get to experiment with different content creation and it’s fun! Especially when you start to see results from your efforts.	Unpredictability The digital world and customer behaviours change at a faster pace these days.  I had to adopt a different mindset when changing from a steady paycheck from my corporate job, to earning in digital marketing which can fluctuate.  This can be a smoother transition by building up the skills you need in your spare time, while still in employment.
Uncapped Earnings Digital marketing roles, especially in specialised areas like affiliate marketing, can be lucrative. The opportunity for passive income through affiliate marketing or digital products can significantly boost your earning potential.	Results As you are relying on data and outcomes, you have to get a good system in place for yourself to analyse this, so that you don’t end up checking results 24/7 and burning yourself out!
Continuous Learning and Growth You get to stay up to date with the latest trends and technologies, which can significantly expand your skill set beyond the corporate job.  This is a great confidence booster!	Remote If you are used to being social in your corporate job, you may find it isolating when working remotely. I’ve managed to get the best of both worlds by joining a network of other go getters and still enjoying the flexibility of working how I choose.

My husband and I no previous skills or experience, or product ideas, so we decided to focus on Affiliate Marketing.  It’s a great way to start if you are a newbie like us!

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is where you promote a company’s products or service online and you can earn commissions by sending people to their products/services.  This is usually done through you being provided a unique affiliate link which tracks the online traffic/sales of your offer. Therefore, it is a win win as that company has more exposure and sales, and you are rewarded as the Affiliate for your efforts!

Why Choose Affiliate Marketing?

1. You don’t need an existing product to sell to get started
2. You don’t need to enjoy selling; in fact, it’s ok if you hate it!
3. It’s all about helping others to find a solution to a problem they are experiencing
4. You don’t need to invest a fortune in buying inventory or hiring employees
5. You don’t need to quit your full-time job; you can get started in your spare time
6. You don’t even need any specialised experience or technical skills!
7. You can build a passive income stream

What Is Passive Income…Really?

Essentially, passive income is where you can generate income without having to be actively involved in day to day operations. You need to complete the initial work to get everything set up.  Once you are up and running, it’s important to monitor how things are going so from my perspective, I wouldn’t say that there is absolutely no involvement needed on an ongoing basis.  A pro with this…it is different to the corporate world of earning money, where you have to consistently trade your time to earn your salary.

How To Speed Up The Process Of Getting Started

My husband and I realised early on that we wouldn’t be able to learn what we needed to make our dream happen, without any training, support and help. 

If I ever wanted to learn new skills in my corporate job, I would often have some form of training.  I applied the same principle with starting our own online business doing affiliate marketing.  We joined an education programme which teaches newbies like us how to get started. Final Thoughts On This Change In Career

Is a change in career from a Corporate Office job to working independently online in Digital Marketing worth it? My answer is yes!! There will be a million reasons you can think of to not make the change; no time, no tech skills, no clue on how to start, fear of it failing, among many others.  I had these exact same thoughts, which is why I wanted to share my journey with you.

I had a realisation in my journey! If I had only put 50% effort into my corporate job, I wouldn’t have done well. The same is true for starting out as an affiliate marketer. Success requires dedication, a strong work ethic, being present, and investing your energy. You give this effort to the company you work for, so why not do it for yourself? There will be bumps in the road, but they help you grow and develop even further. It doesn’t mean you have to quit your job straight away, you can start building the skills and experience in your spare time to make the transition smoother financially.
